Upcoming: Alumni Reunion

On the 30th of September it’s time again for another UCU alumni reunion!
Whether you have graduated only recently or (what feels like) a long time ago, this’ll be a great opportunity to reminisce and catch up with old friends and the people from your year. Held in the trusty UCSA College Bar, the theme for this year’s reunion will be ‘Back to the Bubble’. Doors open at 21h, where you’ll be greeted with a free drink (with bubbles, of course) and a performance, after which you’ll be able to party like old times, enjoy the cheap beer, see how much or little has changed on campus, and find out what everyone you know has been up to.

Note: The car gate will remain open all night.

The Scholarship Dinner will be postponed to a TBA date in the Spring. Unfortunately, we’ve received too few reservations before the deadline for the event to be viable. Donations towards the Scholarship Fund are welcome at any time; if you wish to make a one-off donation, please transfer your chosen amount to the UCAA bank account. Keep an eye out on the website, our social media en your email inbox for the new date.

The Network Society: Career Day 2011!

Huge increase in alumni turnout – Thanks to all who attended!

On the 12th of April, UCU held its annual Career Conference. The theme was The Network Society and with the keynote speaker, Francisco van Jole (famous Dutch Internet journalist), starting the conference with a speech on how Internet is changing society and even the way we think, we went to our sessions all very much aware of the significance of networks in our daily lives. These sessions included workshops run by Bain, SNV and Unilever (both in its R&D and management capacity) amongst others, and roundtable discussions led by Dick Leurdijk (formerly of the Clingendael Institute), and Erik Stam (innovation economics professor at the Utrecht School of Economics).
Law firm De Brauw was in attendance and during their workshop they had something rather special lined up. Each of their attendees was given a robe to wear to give them a flavour of legal garb, and a case-study to work on to sharpen their legal skills.
One key aspect of this year’s Career Day was the level of alumni attendance. Unilever (Bart Stiggelbout (’07)), Bain (Reinier de Jong (’04)), Médecins Sans Frontières (Mariah Mansvelt Beck (’03)) and SNV (Marta Schäferová (’09)) were all partially represented by UCU alumni, a fact of which we are proud. The UCAA had also invited back several alumni to be visible on campus during the day for students to approach with any queries they might have about career paths and after the dinner in the Bar a chat-show was initiated with these alumni. Throughout the day alumni were interviewed on camera and these videos will be available in due course through the UCAA website. In addition to this, the number of alumni attending Career Day itself had more than quadrupled. Career Day is not just for current UC students; it is also geared towards graduates as for recruitment purposes companies are very interested in also meeting older students. To those alumni who attended a big thanks and please leave your feedback below as to what you thought of the Career Day and what could be improved or done differently in years to come.

History & Heritage Festival: Good to be back

Clear skies, a shining sun and happy dancing people were a few factors contributing to a fantastic Festival celebrating the 375th birthday of Utrecht University. Themed “History and Heritage”, past and present were fused into a vibrant atmosphere where students, alumni, family, military veterans and neighbors experienced a unique day of memory, celebration and entertainment. Before UCU was founded in 1997, the area was used for barracks since early 20th century, homing hundreds of soldiers training to defend our country. In memory of this time, a military marching band performed and there was an exhibition of the former Kromhout Kazerne. But the history of our small campus reaches even further. In the Middle Ages it housed a monastry and a field with gallows. Did you know stadium Galgenwaard is a trace of this sinister history? Currently, the new Kromhout Kazerne is constructed next to campus, where the headquarters of the Dutch Ministry of Defense will be stationed.
The festival was officially opened by the Rector Magnificus of Utrecht University and the Utrecht Oost Councillor, followed by a performance by the military marching band Fanfarekorps der Genie, the veteran band of the Engineer Corps that were once stationed on campus. Throughout the day lectures were held in the Auditorium within the theme of History and Heritage, to explore the history of Utrecht, the Waterline defense system and the story behind the architecture of campus, with subsequent tours. Events on the main stage on the Quad were an exposé of student life on campus, with a little help of some alumni. A variety of music, dance and drama performances (remember Super Sticky Surfaces in the bar?) were showcased and received with loud applause. Committees had set up stalls to feature their work fed by their passions. At the UCAA, alumni and students could grab a campus map created by Sietse Brouwer (Class of 2007) and fill in their most precious memories of their time at UCU. The makings of the Cultural Cookery in the Food Court on the opposite side of the Quad filled our noses with the most delicious smells from all over the world, and the proceeds will go to charity causes selected by HumCo. In addition to all this, children (and not only children!) were having a blast on the bouncy castle or with old-fashioned Dutch games. The fraternities and sororities had set up a lounge area behind Locke, where UCDJ was rocking and visitors could dare each other to ride the rodeo bull, shoot at Justin Bieber or paint your face yellow. All day, and while awaiting the final acts by Ska-Rockabily band TrenchcoaT and DJ Arjan van Midden, more than 70 alumni crowded together on the Quad and behind Locke for some dancing, drinking, and having one hell of a good old time. Check out the video and the photos, and let us know what you enjoyed most during the Festival!
