Newsletter September 2013

Dear alumni,

We proudly present to you the UCAA Newsletter for September 2013! Now that Summer is over and many of you are starting exciting things again, here’s some news from alumni affairs.

Sincerely yours,

The UCAA Board

Lustrum Party

Fifteen years ago UCU first opened its doors, still as a partial construction site, with Facebook not yet a procrastination opportunity. Since then, over 2,000 of us have passed through the gates. We want to celebrate this milestone in good old tradition, together with current students, some faculty, and probably a surprise guest or two. Make sure that we, the alumni, are not only there for some food for nostalgia, but that we can show them all how to party!

Join your fellow alumni on Friday September 6 from 21.00 in the UCSA Bar!

Post Survey

Last month we sent out a new Post, which we of course hope you have enjoyed reading. (Didn’t get one? Send us an e-mail with your correct address and we’ll try to still get one to you.) To figure out how you’ve liked Post so far and how we can make it even better we’d very much appreciate if you could fill out our short little survey (it will take you less than 5 minutes). Your reward will be getting your voice heard and even awesomer Posts in the future.

Board Positions & Vacancy

Lots of changes in the UCAA Board to inform you about: First off, our handsome & beloved Chair Kiran Coleman (’05) (who’s definitely not writing this about himself in the third person) is leaving the board after 3 years of dutiful service and his position will be taken over by our great PR/External Representative Luisa Kühlmann (’09). Her tasks will be done by Indra Spronk-Baas (’06), while the Secretary position will henceforth be filled by Roeland van Beek (’11). All this has resulted in a vacancy opening up for the Events Coordinator position. So if a (partly paid) position on the UCAA board is something you might be interested in, now’s your chance! For more info on the position and how to apply, click here.

Pub Quiz

Up for a night of good fun, beer, and very-useful-information with friends? The UCAA Pub Quiz is coming to fulfill your needs. No exact date has been set yet – as soon as we know more, you will too – so find your teammates, update all your knowledge, and keep an eye on your inbox.

UCAA Newsletter May 2013

Dear alumni,

Welcome to the UCAA Newsletter for May 2013! Here’s some of what’s going on in the world UCU alumni affairs right now:

Lustrum

Life after UC?! We’ve all been through it! Do you have an interesting perspective on how your Liberal Arts & Sciences background at UCU has affected your prospects on the labor market? We’re looking for participants to attend UCU’s Lustrum conference “Liberal Arts & Sciences and the Labor Market” this September. E-mail ucu.lustrumucu@uu.nl to let us hear your story!

Please note that attendance to the Lustrum is limited. If you are invited and cannot meet the costs of your attendance, we may be able to support you.

Summer event coming up June 22nd

Summer is almost there! Will you be in or near the Netherlands in June? Come celebrate the scarce warm weather with us at the UCAA Summer Event on campus on June 22. There will be drinks, fun and a barbecue – there’s no reason to miss out on seeing your old friends again. More details will follow soon, save the date!

New treasurer

The UCAA is very happy to welcome its newest board member, Babak Mohammadzadeh (UCU class of 2010), who is serving as our new treasurer. We’re very happy to have him on board!

Donation withdrawals

As you may or may not have noticed if you’re a UCAA contributor, the donations for 2013 (that are usually withdrawn in December) have not happened yet; this because of the transition period that took place between treasurers. Now that we do again have an awesome new treasurer, we are putting him to work and the withdrawals for those who filled out a contribution form before the start of 2013 will take place in early June. Should you wish to become a contributor starting next year (and why wouldn’t you?), the information on how to do so can be found here.

Sincerely yours,
The UCAA Board

UCAA Newsletter February 2013

Dear alumni,

Welcome to the UCAA Newsletter for February 2013! Here’s some of what’s going on in the world UCU alumni affairs right now:

New Board Members

Though we are sad to have said goodbye to our awesome former board members Iris Otto & Leonie Hussaarts (and we thank them for all the great work they did), we are also very happy to be able to announce two great new additions to our board: Indra Spronk-Baas (’06) has taken over the Secretary position, while Luisa Kühlmann (‘09) is now our new PR/External Representative.

Open board position

As our treasurer Sarah Carmichael will soon be taking her leave as well, this means we also have a new vacancy waiting to be filled. If you’re interested in joining our board, have affinity with numbers and are looking for a good addition to your network and CV, get in touch with us through info@ucaa.nl or click here for more information

Pub quiz

It’s time for the annual UCAA Pub Quiz again. Friday March 1st at 20:00 in
the UCSA Bar is your chance to show off with everything you’ve learned after you left UC. We hope to see you there!

Spring break to your future

Have you always wanted to show current UCU students how amazing your city or university is? Are there things you wish you had known before you went there? Here’s your chance to help out future generations. The UCAA offers students the opportunity to spend a few days of their spring break (March 18-22) with UCU alumni abroad, so that they can get insider’s information and a clearer view on their prospective studies. Would you like to help out and have some fun by showing students around or offering a couch for a night? Reply to this newsletter or send an email with your city and current studies to info@ucaa.nl.

Alumni Award

What UCU alumnus or alumna has impressed you? Who do you think deserves the 2013 UCAA Alumni Award? Any suggestions? Drop us a line at info@ucaa.nl! We’re also looking for people to help pick this year’s winner. Let us know if you’d like to be on this jury! You won’t have to meet up in person in Utrecht, contact can be purely digital, so anyone can sign up!

Sincerely yours,

The UCAA Board

UCAA Newsletter September 2012

Dear Alumni,

Welcome to the UCAA Newsletter for September 2012! Here’s some of what’s going on in the world UCU alumni affairs right now:

New Board Positions
Blatantly copying the foliage, the UCAA Board is currently undergoing some changes. After more than 2 years of being an awesome Vice-Chair, Iris Otto (‘09) is laying down her position. Her tasks will be taken over by our Secretary Kiran Coleman (‘05), who will take on the heretofore vacant position of Chair. In January our equally awesome PR/External Representative Leonie Hussaarts (‘08) will be vacating her position, meaning that if you’d like to join the board now or in the near future, there are two vacancies for you to apply to. More info and how to apply can be found here.

Oliver Wyman Workshop

On the evening of November 1st the UCAA and Oliver Wyman are teaming up to organize a workshop for all (soon to be) graduates who are interested in finance, strategy consulting and have a strong international view of the world. If you’d like to know more about how the financial system works and want to get an expert’s view on recent developments, you can sign up by sending an e-mail to info@ucaa.nl. For more info: click here or send us an e-mail.

Post

Post is on the hunt again! We’re looking for articles, spiffy or long-form, maybe a dash of fiction, on the rocks. We also love poems (although we haven’t had any yet, so please help us out of our poem virginity phase) and we really love creative content, photography, illustrations, cartoons, graffiti, objets trouvés, BRING IT ON!* So, please, get in touch and tell us what you’d like to submit.
*Not a crappy cheerleader movie reference (nor a GREAT cheerleader movie reference).

Regional Facebook Groups
Did you know that besides the regular facebook group where you can talk with your fellow alumni, there are also a whole bunch of regional groups? To make it even easier to find and interact with the alumni in your area, we put together a list of all the currently existing groups, which you can find here. Check it out, join the one closest to you, and if there’s an alumni hub we’ve overlooked, let us know.

Sincerely yours,
The UCAA Board

UCAA Newsletter May 2012

Dear alumni,

Welcome to the UCAA Newsletter for May 2012! Lots of exciting things to talk about, so we’ll get right to it:

Sports Day
Remember those great afternoons around the soccer pitch? On Saturday, June 23rd, the UCAA will organize the World Cup Revisited on campus: a championship like back in the day, with not only soccer, but also a number of other sports, maybe even sumo wrestling in those funny fat suits. It will be a great opportunity to meet both your fellow alumni and your old home again, after which we will celebrate with a barbecue. You can sign up with your team of 6 people and a team name by sending an e-mail to info@ucaa.nl. We hope to see you all in June – and yes, you are allowed to dress up.

Post & TalkingPost updates
We’re currently very hard at work putting together the latest edition of your alumni magazine Post (expected to hit your doormats again this June), but we could still very much use your input. If you, or alumni you know, achieved something you’d like to update the rest of the alumni community on (awards, PhDs, babies, weddings, other things you’re awesome at) e-mail them to info@ucaa.nl so we can include them in the Who What Where section. Also, have you uploaded a picture of your young self to Funny Moppets yet? If not, you should, because the best ones just might make it into Post.
To tide you over until the next Post arrives there are lots of exciting things going on over at TalkingPost.org as well. Two new regular columns by Somaye Dehban (‘07) have seen the light of day (with more columns from different authors to come), the good old campus magazine Boomerang has started putting its articles online for your reading pleasure, and, in case you were wondering what some of our alumni are writing on other sites, we’ve put up a new alumni blog page with convenient links to all that good stuff. And, as always, if you’re interested in contributing something or maybe would like to see your blog featured, send us an e-mail at info@talkingpost.org!

UCU Annual Review
UCU has put up its 2011 Annual Review, including the results of the alumni questionnaire that many of you filled out last year. So, if you have ever wondered what percentage of alumni is now working for the government, or what kinds of positions alumni hold, or if you’re interested in UCU’s education budget, or just procrastinating, you can find everything you’re looking for here.

Sincerely yours,
The UCAA Board
